Blog

Thurs 31st Oct 2013

It's been a few weeks since I have written a blog for you, so here goes.
Our 2 day workshop in Lakes Entrance was a great success, with all the girls producing a number of blocks for their own "Wings"  Quilt.  We had an enjoyable time, not too much stress for anyone, & the Fishing Club is the very best venue on earth.  Just the stunning views alone are inspirational.  Our delicious food, as always, was much appreciated, many thanks to Robyn.  Here's hoping you have all found some time to sew  more blocks.  Well done to Jenny for taking on some Needleturn Applique, & Kath, who is about to have a lesson also.
I will have some photos to share once I upload them, the colours are amazing.  The fabric & colour choices were adventurous, so I am really proud of you all.
It was so exciting to see a beautiful completed quilt from last years workshop by Barb.  Congratulations Barb, your quilt is a credit to you, we all loved it.
Keep on sewing
Lyn

Looking forward to another productive workshop with the girls.  Replacing the Mystery Quilt this year, I have decided to offer this lovely project.  So no mystery about it, you have a photo to help with the Requirements list,  makes the process of choosing much simpler.
Scroll down & have a look at the photos of  WINGS  below, & further below, shots on a white bed.
Please contact me if you wish to join us for a wonderful weekend of sewing, with a lovely group of ladies, fantastic food & plenty of inspiration.

Girls on a mission
Thursday 18th July 2013

Here we are finally back in Blog world.  It hasn't been kind to me of late, certain little things have been happening to my Blog, (out of my control, of course)  However, lets make the most of it while we have it, you never know just when it will let you down!!  here are some lovely pics of blocks from my class way back in May, seems like an eternity, sorry girls to keep you waiting. The weekend was very successful with everyone achieving well, & turning out some fabulous blocks. Well done ladies.

One lovely blue quilt in the making

Just a few photos to show the
stunning range of colours
the girls chose for this Quilt.

Another beautiful collection, so adventurous with the aqua, purple & red.
Love it !!!

Monday 6th May 2013
This friday I am off on a wonderful road trip to Phillip Island for the Patches Weekend Workshops.  My class is doing one of my favourite quilts "falling Stars" I never get tired of this one.  So much fun wading through everyone's fabrics & it's a delight to guide these sewers through  new blocks & hopefully 16 very happy students with a good start on a brand new quilt.  Last year my time with a lovely bunch of ladies was so enjoyable, & I can't wait to see some completed quilts from that class.  It's very nice to be invited back again, & I am ready for a fabulous weekend.

Sunday July 7th & July 28th  "Wings" Quilt Class at Lily Lane Rosedale
These 2 days are set aside for my new quilt "Wings"
We have decided 2 seperate full day classes will be most productive for this quilt.  We will make a good start on it the first day, & then with just a little homework, a lot can be achieved on the second day.  So don't miss out on it, I'm sure you are going to love my special new quilt.  Contact
Jenny at Lily Lane Rosedale   to book for the class.  See some pics below.

"Wings"

Such pretty, delicate fabrics, in just 3 colourways.  Pinks, Greens & Greys, it's a nice combo.
Looking forward to helping you make it too.

Thursday (Anzac Day) 25th April 2013
Since my last post I have completed my Quilt "Wings" & also finished a new Applique Sample for classes.

Cot Quilt for Sophie

The baby quilt I have been working on for little Sophie (great niece) is all done & ready for her when she visits us with her big brother Roy, tomorrow.  She is 6 mths old now & finally the cot quilt goes to a new home. Looking forward to a few cuddles from them both.  Some photos to share below.
Applique Class Sample

Needleturn Applique Class 23rd June 2013
A full day class at  Lily Lane Rosedale This is a chance to try Needleturn, it really is quite easy & very rewarding.  Perfect project during the winter months.  Once you start it's addictive, a wonderful addiction.  Come & join us for an enjoyable productive day of Applique.
Keep sewing!

Hard working group
My weekend workshop at Lily Lane Rosedale was so enjoyable, & I had a wonderful group of ladies.  Such hard workers also, in fact it was so quiet at times I had to look hard to see if I had students in the room. So as usual they achieved really well, with many blocks finished on the day.  Some really unusual combinations with dark backgrounds to the stars.  Don't they look great?  Thank you all for a lovely two days, hopefully we'll see some amazing Star quilts soon.  Keep cutting & stitching,
Lyn

One of the baby quilts on the go
On the road tomorrow very early, all things combined, quick haircut at 7.45am, deliver No 4 Grandchild to her boyfriend, & then on to Rosedale for teaching Brodee's Star Quilt for 2 days.  Very much looking forward to this one.  On the right is one of a few baby quilts I have on my list of things to get done.  Quilting, backing & binding, almost there.

New Quilt "Wings"

Left is my most recent favourite project.
A quilt for one of my special grand girls.
A class project also, that means Stevie, (recipient) will be sharing it with Nan for quite a while.  I've promised to look after
it really well for her.  It is in lovely delicate
colours, pink, green & grey, on a very light
background.  It suits her, we chose the colours
together a while ago.  More pics' after it is
quilted.  Must get some sleep, big weekend ahead
Cheers,  Lyn

Monday 4th March 2013

Well here we are well into the New Year.  2013 is moving along at a frantic pace, at least for me.  After a long break I am now back into the swing of sewing & teaching.  A quilt I have been working on for some time is coming along well, Applique blocks all done, pieced blocks ready, & it's time to put it all together.
That will take a while, but it looks lovely & I am really happy with it.
At least one baby quilt is sewn, but not quilted, getting there, so happy these babies are in cots for some time, will post a picture soon.
Must run, I have prep work to do for some Applique classes coming up!!
More Stitching,
Lyn

Thurs' 6th Dec 2012

Yes it's been a while since I last blogged, the usual excuses & a few new ones.  Have had a small break from sewing since the huge "Mystery Quilt Weekend"  However, there was a very successful Needleturn class at Candleberry Country, where each student seemed to achieve quite a decent day of Applique, & they grasped it very well I must say.  I have attended Quilt Market in Melbourne & found some great new contacts & purchased a bunch of lovely fat quarters.
On a personal note, my family is expanding with new baby arrivals, 2 great nieces, & another baby girl arriving in the new year.  Of course that means more baby quilts to be done over the holiday season.  Sorting some fabrics now for a few days of frantic piecing, after our early family Christmas get-to-gether this weekend.  So, as one would expect, there has been much cooking & preparing recently, replacing the sewing.  Bring on Jan' 2013 I say.  Many projects to be sewn & there are lots of plans in place for 2013.
Looking forward to a productive year, with lots of classes & workshops coming up & countless pieces to work on.
Photos to share next time, when things are back in the SWING.
Christmas Wishes & Joy to all of my readers, may you have a Happy, Healthy & Safe holiday,
I hope you find time for a little peace & quiet,
& time to sew a few stitches.

"Brodee's Star"
named after my
eldest Grandchild
      "Brodee"
Finally we can reveal the Mystery Quilt.  Yes, the Mystery is over, & we all had the best weekend.  Seventeen lovely ladies spent the weekend working away on this, my latest project.
It's a fun quilt to make, & I'm sure the group will be emailing me some very welcome photos of their work soon.
I had a fabulous time, with great company, wonderful food, thanks to my friend Robyn, & a very keen lot of sewers.
With many different fabric choices, there will be some fascinating quilts to come, I hope you all enjoy making yours as much as I did mine.
Photos of the girls on the weekend to come, stay tuned for me to upload them to this computer, just need a little more time !!!
Enjoy!

 Wed 31st Oct' 2012

How Exciting !!
My Mystery quilt is on it's way back from the Quilter, so must decide on the binding & have it all done by the 10th Nov.  Funny thing is, It's almost like a small child, can't wait to see it again, with it's extra dimension, & the relief of having it back will be, well, a relief !  It feels like it's been away on a holiday weekend.  Then it's back to work (or School) & continue on the Journey.
Will be sharing some photos in a couple of weeks, once the mystery is over.
Till then, keep sewing,
Lyn

Wed 24th Oct' 2012

The Mystery Quilt has gone to be quilted, & I have very much enjoyed making it, even with a deadline!!  Can't reveal the name yet, well maybe I will, just half the name.  Brodee's  . . . .
Brodee is 19 years old & my eldest Grandaughter, she is helping me,(make that teaching me all about my new computer program)  Yes thats right, I am a challenge for her, no doubt!!  so this quilt is named after her. She is very busy with her studies, but still manages to fit Nan in whenever I need her, such a darling.  Here she is with our little dog Mickie, are'nt the gorgeous??

Ruby Square BOM Quilt

RUBY SQUARE
Here it is finally all done & ready for quilting.  "Ruby Square" BOM Quilt.  Wow 2 quilts finished this month!!  Now for a small rest, from machine sewing that is.  No time to waste with instructions, for both quilts, and always needleturn to work on.
Can't wait to see what Tina (quilter) has in store for this one.  It's quite different for me, a very light background, something I don't often use, but I'm so happy with it, feels fresh, crisp & clean & looks lovely on the bed.
Til next time,
Lyn

Wed 10th Oct' 2012

Last Saturday was spent teaching Needleturn Applique to a lovely group of ladies at Lily Lane of Rosedale.
I found this group to be very attentive & motivated to achieve a good result, & they did.  It's always refreshing & rewarding for me to have great results, so well done to you all.  I hope I have helped you to understand the benefits of needleturn & how lovely the finished piece is.  And just maybe, it's not so daunting, perhaps to try it on your next quilt. Persistance is the key.
Speaking of persisting, I am, with the Mystery Quilt, which is coming up very quickly on the 10 & 11th Nov'
It will be finished for quilting next week (I hope) just a slight deadline (I'm not good with deadlines) Of course I can't share any pics' with you until after the weekend, but there will be lots then.  I'm loving the quilt, by the way !!  There may be a couple of places available, so contact me if interested.

Fri 28th Sept' 2012

Yes 2 blogs in a day   Making up for lost time, it's definitely time to get back to the important things in life.  Patchwork & Quilting.  so, this is what has been taking up much of my time recently, along with a very fast approaching deadline for my Mystery Quilt.  More on that later.  However, this one pictured, & unquilted, is now finally ready for my quilter.
RUBY SQUARE  is my  BOM Quilt  & will be available soon.  This is a sneak peak, you will see in full once it is quilted.  Some instructions to complete, using my new "challenging" program, & then the 6 part BOM will be ready.
Til next time,  (sooner)
Lyn

Fri 28th Sept' 2012

Well it's been quite a while since I last blogged, so my apologies for the long delay.  It has been quite a hectic time for me recently, but we are back on track now.  The holiday had to come to an end, Queensland is wonderful, & we hope to visit there again next winter, if only for the weather.  It really does have much more than just sunshine though.  As you see by this photo, beautiful cottages, & this is the last in my  Cute Cottage Collections  & what a lovely one to finish on.
A Beautiful site for us, who travel by, but most of all to the people who live there & enjoy it every day............

Wed 22nd Aug' 2012

Nice colours, garden to come!
Cute Cottage Collection

A nice group of very sweet Queenslanders I have photographed on my travels.  They just seem to find me,  I love the little differeneces in them, although there are definite similarities throughout my favourites.  It seems I favour traditional houses with big veranders, french doors, & a cosy feel to them. What a surprise! that is a very close description  to my own home.  It's also funny how some of these resemble my Grandmother's homestead at the farm, & others important to my childhood. So there it is, I have discovered my likes & dislakes, tastes & appreciation come from way, way back.
Reflections of the past, where & when they appear.
Keep a look out for yours,
Cheers
Lyn

Soft Pink & white was the feature colours on this one
With a lush tropical garden.

Soooo Sweet

Fri 17th Aug 2012

Two more designs from "A Simple Life" The lovely little book by Anni Downs.  Both these cute bags are a must for all of you  bag ladies out there, & I know there are many of you.  Aren't they wonderful bags, both stamped with fantasy, typical of Anni's style & personalilty.
What a beautiful designer & an equally lovely lady.

Today was a great sewing day for me, much more BOM Quilt done!!  I must say I am really enjoying it, & I should have a few more pics' to show soon.  Slightly challenging in the caravan, machine on one end of the table, cutting mat on the other end, Mickie, (dog) sleeps under it.  Mini ironing board on the end of the bed, iron sits on the sink, obediently, blocks laid out on the bed also, then it's work, work, & remember where the trip wires are. (Electrical cords that is.)  Then it's pack it all away under the bed, & bring it out again tomorrow.
Loving it,really!!!  Isn't Patchwork a labour of love?
Cheers,
Lyn

Mon 13th Aug 2012

Taking your sewing on the road with you is a worthwhile approach to take.  It keeps me busy & occupied while my husband does his beloved fishing.  I keep up with my work, much like it is at home, the samples must be completed.
Another Cute Cottage in my
Queenslander collection
A small Applique for my
 BOM Quilt
Which brings me to my most recent projects, which are also the projects I am working on while we are away.  The BOM quilt is slowly getting there, & I intend to have that sample finished before I return.  Then there is "Wings"  My granddaughter will be looking for some activity happening with it.  It is after all, going to be hers, one day.  I designed this quilt for Stevie, & of course she helped choose the colours & fabrics.  The "bird" applique design is an enjoyable process for me.  There will be quite a few applique blocks, the exact number unknown as yet!  Hmm, must have an applique on the go at all times.....  Also with me, is enough fabric to complete the "Mystery Quilt"  for a workshop in Nov' 2012   Ambitious word "complete" I'll probably ignor that word, so my aim is to "complete"
a 1/4 of it.  We'll see how we go.
 Keep Quilting,
Lyn

Thurs' 2nd Aug 2012

While travelling to Queensland, of course I couldn't go past one of my
favourite shops  "The Home Patch" Bathurst.  So here is Anni's latest little book "The Simple Life" which I bought & will show you some of her cute designs.  The first being the little "Turtle Pin Cushion"  it is the most
pretty little thing, so sweet, & looks quite simple to make.
The lovely quilt is typical of Anni's designs, & I can imagine some ladies
I know will be making that one.
In the coming weeks I will show you some more of the projects in this divine little book.
I had a lovely time there, coming away very happy with my own special
(Anni) treats, some of her gorgeous new Xmas prints, I could spend hours,
but Noel (patient husband) & Mickie (our very patient dog)  await, & it's
time to be on the road again.  Hope to be back there soon!!!
til next time,
Lyn

On the road again!  Back through "Howard" with out doubt my favourite little town this month.
And my second visit to "Van Cootens Drapery Store" it certainly didn't disappoint.  With a small list in hand I found my way through all the other interesting little detours, the clothing racks, hat stand, linen shelf, ribbons, buttons, to name just a few, to the small room at the back, overflowing with patchwork fabrics & everything quilting.  After attending to my list, it was over to open the "warehouse across the street" (the second heaven for quilters) for two other patchworkers & myself.
Just had to have a few more of those $10 mtr fabrics & some bits & pieces.  What a treat, I recommend this shop as a must see for all of you road tripping quilters.  The service is great, the people lovely, & so helpful.  Don't know if I will get back there any time soon, but I count myself lucky to have visited twice. Just a few final photos of this one to share with you :)
By for now,
Lyn

Sat' July 22nd 2012

The things you find when on a trip, it's really more about where your interests are, I think.  Well for me it's usually fabrics & textiles, but my other passion is quaint houses & beautiful old buildings, & surprise !!! antiques & collectables.  Luckily for me, I can share this interest with my husband Noel as he enjoys rumaging through old things also.
While tripping around Qld, I plan to share some of my favourite things. Here are a few photos to start us off.
I happened upon the fabulous Van Cootens Drapery Store at Howard Qld.  Wow! what a treasure trove for the Patchworker & Quilter.  The first little shop I found my way into was unbelievable, packed tight with all sorts of fabrics & threads & everything a quilter could possibly need.  Imagine my delight when I heard there was more to this little treasure, "just across the street behind the hairdresser, we have more", she said.  More, really, how extroardinary!  Yes, lots & lots more fabrics, notions, books, patterns, threads, patchwork heaven.  All this in one tiny little town, what a find.........
Of course, I couldn't leave without a few goodies, a big table of $10 mtr fabrics entertained me for quite a long while.  It's exciting to note, this new wonderful find of mine is but a small detour, twice, as we travel back & forth.  Possibly a good toilet or rest break at Howard one thinks.
Quaint little Queenslander

but hopefully someone else will see the beauty in it & give some TLC.

Just one room at Van Cootans, there are

Thurs' 12th July 2012
A snapshot of the ladies working last Saturday at
Candleberry Country, Yarragon.  Thanks to Natalie for getting the class together. We had a very productive day & I think they were all pleased with themselves.  Robyn & her two daughters are producing 3 beautiful quilts.  We were lucky enough to meet & have a cuddle of the newest little member of the family too, sure to be a future quilter.  Sue is making a runner & Alice a quilt, all from the "Circles of Time" Block.
Back to work for me, with 3 quilts on the go there is no time to spare. Will share photos soon,  Lyn

Fri' 6th July 2012

It's a long roadtrip for me tomorrow down the highway to Yarragon, about 2 1/2 hrs travel time, to teach at the lovely Candleberry Country.  Tomorrow I am teaching Baby Circles, a tiny version of the "Circles of Time Quilt"  This is quite different to the large quilt, it is considerably more controlled in the colours & prints.  So I am really excited to see what the girls come up with, should be fun.  I love this quilt, & it is always a pleasure to teach & see how different they all turn out.  Will share some photos after the class.  Meanwhile here is a photo of some blocks made by one of my recent students.  How different they all look !!
Until next time, keep sewing
Lyn

Wed' 27th June 2012

This week I have been busy finishing the needle case to complete this set pictured at right. Now I will use it every day, and guess what,  it's the best hold-all for all of my applique tools, bits & pieces, needles & pins.  It's a keeper for me !!   Everything in this picture fits in the purse, easily, with room to spare.  So I am very happy with myself.  Well it will be a pattern once I make new samples with a slight design change to the applique.  By the way those green handled scissors are Perfect Scissors (Small Size)  I love them, so easy to use that serrated blade.  Other favourite things in this picture, the gorgeous little tape measure made by Anne, last Xmas.  Can't live with out gel pens, long darners, & applique pins are a must for me.

Winter is definately the best time to sew, so I should put everything back in the bag & get to it.           Happy Days,
Lyn

Thur' 21st June 2012

For many months now I have been asked frequently, by past students of the "Annual Mystery Quilt" weekend we ran during our time at Boatshed Quilting, if I would ever consider doing it again.  Well after much deliberation and careful procrastination, I have decided to put the wheels in motion & get one under way.  It occured to me, in making this decision, that I had no excuses really, why it couldn't be happening.  After all I am not running a shop now, & I've always loved this weekend of teaching !!!
The Quilt design is decided & I am sorting fabrics for it now.
10th & 11th Nov 2012    is the new Mystery Quilt Weekend. At the Fishing Club Lakes Entrance
More on this later.

Wed' June 13th 2012

Last Saturday I spent the day at Yarragon for a "Trunk Show & Finishing day" organised by Natalie of Candleberry Country.  It was a very nice day, & I spent lots of time chatting to some familiar faces, & some new faces as well.  I was thrilled to find such interest in my classes, & my {ever so slowly} expanding pattern line. What a delight on the day, to see one of my recent students' quilts, almost finished.  It's always a thrill to see a completed project after a class, makes me feel proud & a tiny bit possessive.  It's so rewarding & is a pleasure to have inspired someone to enjoy the process & finish.
Catching up with Viv Robinson (designer) is always fun, her patterns were a great seller in our shop & her classes, very popular.  Gail & Lisa's designs, as always, were outstanding.  We certainly sold lots of Gail Pan patterns at the Boatshed, & it's so nice to see how well she is doing now. "A very clever designer"
I loved Lisa's designs & her work is just beautiful, I'm sure her samples are admired by everyone.
So thank you Natalie for a wonderful day, & those scones, wow, the biggest & best I've ever tasted!!
Until next time, keep sewing,
Lyn

Wed' May 30th 2012

As promised we are back with a few words.

Do you ever wonder what happened to the week, well this is one of those.  It has definitely flown, & the weekend is drawing in on me, with lots of patterns to pack.  I am off to Lily Lane Rosedale, again this Saturday to teach Neddleturn Applique to a very keen group of ladies.  This is a favourite class of mine, & I was so happy to hear from a previous student recently, how she has become devoted to it now, since our first class together last year.  Keep it up Wendy, it gets even better the more you do.  Can't wait to see how my next group of ladies take to it.
Needleturn takes a little patience & plenty of practice.  You can't be too critical of yourself at first, give it time, & don't take on anything that's too hard or complicated, there's simply no need.   Try some different thread types, & needles, see which suit you best.  Ease into it, take your time & enjoy the lovely finish, you'll be hooked on it in no time.
Happy Needleturning,
Lyn

May 23rd 2012

Finally getting to the Blog part of this website.

It has taken me some time to get it all up & running, & it's never finished, so it seems.  That's really the whole point of this exercise though....   Continue, add, write, photos, little notes, anything!!!
So this is the spot where I intend to write a little something every week  [promise I'll try anyway]  Let's just see if I can keep up with it :)
Today, I spent quite a long time on my new small project out in my studio, or shedio, as my brother renamed it for me. {converted garage}  & tonight I have almost finished the hand sewing.  Stuff the cushion next, add the wool needle holders, blanketstitch them & it's done.
Then spend time at the computer on the instructions, photograph, & yes I will have it ready in time.

You guessed it, the new project is  "Cherry Chums" Needle Case & Pin Cushion.  It starts life as a single freebie pattern sheet for the ladies who will be attending The Trunk Show at Yarragon, which I will be involved in.  Natalie from Candleberry Country kindly invited me to show my things, along with Viv Robinson & other designers on  Sat' 9th June.
Come along for a look & get my GREAT FREEBIE PATTERN SHEET, just $10 for the day, incl' morning & avo tea, phone Natalie to book. ph. 56 342755
This new little project will  be in my pattern line after the event.  (It's another birdie thing)  Do have a love of birds, don't we all???
Until next time, happy sewing,

Lyn
